Hi - my 17 year old daughter has been experiencing hair loss and hair thinning. She attributed it to having got Cold but that was over a year ago now. She is stressed with all the A level work she has to do and trying to do well so that she goes to the university of her choice which requires high grades. She is a very good athlete and trains every day. Her diet is very good. She does not get regular periods and her last period was over 3 months ago. My friend who understands health much better than me said that the standard blood test that the NHS does doesn't always consider where it should be for a unique individual. Hair loss and irregular periods can be a sign of thyroid disfunction. Apparently eating more food rich in iodine can help? But the thyroid aspect is more of a concern for me and I don't know whether I should ask to take this further?

Also could be low iron? Or a food intolerance? I am so not a doctor though. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. Sorry, I must have missed it earlier hence a late reply. We did do a blood test and she was a bit low on iron but that's such a mystery because she shouldn't be! All these considerations are really helpful. Thank you, again.

Get her to ask her doctor for a TSH blood test that tells if the thyroid is working at the right level. Feel for any lumps in her neck by thyroid gland. She could be stressed or worried though which might be causing the issues

Thank you so much for this. I'm hoping to do another test soon via a functional medicine doctor. Bit expensive to do this but feel it will be worth it. Stress is most definitely part of how she is at the moment so I feel this is an important factor. Thank you, again.

It sounds to me as though she may have PCOS-polycystic ovary syndrome- many gps know little or nothing about it-she needs to see an endocrinologist to get a proper diagnosis. Don’t be fobbed off or sidetracked!
