Enlarged Ovary, should I be worried

I was in hospital for a couple of days this week with bad endo pain and the doctor happened to mention after scanning me that my left ovary was enlarged. Has anyone else had this should I be worried????

It is normal to have one ovary a different size or shape to the other one.

But if one is 'enlarged' then that would indicate that the doc thinks it was bigger than it ought to be for some reason. It could simply be that it was about to ovulate or had just ovulated.

Do you know where you were on your cycle when you had the scan?

It might possibly mean that it is enveloped in a cyst all of it's own which could well be endo or adhesions.

So it's difficult to know whether to be concerned or not. Was it the sonographer that gave you the news or was it your gynaecologist?

If it was the sonographer, then they would feed that info back to the gynaecology team to be assessed and you might get called back with a view to discussing having a lap op to check it out, or perhaps they will wait and rescan you in a few weeks time to see if the situation has sorted itself out.

It could be perfectly normal, or it could put a dampener on your efforts to get pregnant if that is what you were aiming for. If it is giving you grief then probably a lap op is what's needed to check it out properly and clean it up if it needs removing from a cyst.

If you haven't heard from the hospital in the next month or so, speak to your GP and ask him/her to check what results have come back on your hospital visit, and perhaps ask your GP to chase up clarification of the situation if your notes aren't giving you the answers.

It doesn't sound like an urgently critical problem, but to alleviate your worries you might need to be a bit more pushy in getting more details about it. Though you should give the hospital team time to look at the results of the scan and then feed that back to your GP.

Hey, Thanks for your reply its been very informative.

To give you a bit of back ground, I'm currently on prostap so I don't honestly know where I am in terms of cycle this is month 6.

I had my right tube and ovary removed in september and now awaiting a full hysterecomy in a few weeks.

It was a registra who done the scan and mentioned it, maybe she wanted to show my consultant, I don't know but people have been scarying me saying its a sign of ovarian cancer???? Is this true???

There is a very teeny weeny remote chance, please do not worry on that score though.

Just looking at the statistics and seeing as you know you already have endo, it is so much more likely to be endo related or prostap related or a quirk of the time of the month.

If the registrar thinks for a second it looks sinister they will have you in for surgery within 3 weeks. That's the NHS rules on any suspected ovarian cancer. they are very quick about it and you jump all the normal gynae queues.

If they didn't spot anything sinister in September and that was 5 ish months ago and you have been on prostap ever since, if it was OC then it has not had much chance to develop further.

If you don't get recalled in the next 3 weeks then heave sigh of relief. even if you do get recalled it doesn't mean you have OC, just that they want to check it out.

that could mean a biopsy of the ovary or surrounding tissue or an MRI scan before the big op is due.

The fact is the average age for OC is 63 years old, and most cases are after natural menopause age even in ladies who had endo before reaching menopause age, the vast majority of OC cases are in ladies older than you or I.

I know you cannot help worry about it, because there is always that teeny risk, as indeed there is for any ladies with endo, because having endo does slightly increase the risk statistically, but it really is a remote chance, and so much more likely to be nothing to worry about longterm, might not even be endo related either.

Looking on the bright side, both you and I have only one ovary left, so we have half the chance of the women with 2 ovaries !!!
