Seen my GP who says MART therapy is now used & suggested Fobumix inhaler Any thoughts?

Hi I posted last week after my Asthma review with a health care assistant at my GP surgery who basically tried to tell me to use my Fostair as both a preventer & reliever & tried to remove my Salbutamol Inhaler.

I have since spoken to a GP who says the nurse is correct & they are using MART Therapy now & the suggested inhaler would be Fobumix instead of both my normal inhalers. She did say though that she would not take my current inhalers away if I didn't want them to.

What are your thoughts on this MART Therapy please?

The post before last was also about the MART regime, I put an answer there which I would only repeat here. I know nothing about Fobumix though, my MART inhaler is Fostair 100 MDI (the spray type with a spacer) two puffs morning and evening and I can take 4 other puffs throughout the 24 hours if necessary instead of ventolin. I can also lower the prescribed two puffs to one when very well in the summer months leaving me with 6 extras if I need them (ie before a walk) - only when fine though.

Thanks. I'm starting to understand the concept better. My Fostair is 100 too.

Hi Otto, bit of a long story but i asked to go on Fostair MART a few months ago - was taken off my Fostair 200/6 and put on Fobumix which is a powder inhaler and also MART. The reason for this is that they are wanting to move us all from using inhalers that are powered by gas, due to global warming. I tried the Fobumix but didnt get on with it. I much prefer to use a spacer with Fostair as it gets the medicine to where it is needed. I found some of the powder from Fobumix got stuck in my mouth. I think i was unable to take the deep breath to get it right down. My peak flows went down, so i managed to get put back onto the Fostair MART 100/6 and it is much better for me. But give it a try and see how you get on? I will be interested to hear! all the best Sally

Thanks. It's good to hear that you have managed to revert to your Fostair. My GP said that if I was ok on Fostair then she would let me continue on it. It just seemed strange to swap when things are working well.

Hi, I have just been asked to trial it for two weeks by my respiratory nurse, I’m on Fostair 100/6. She did ask if I wanted to try a powder inhaler but I said I’d rather stick to what I have as it’s been working. Going to give it a try and then she’ll call me to review, she did say if I didn’t feel it was working to start using my blue inhaler again if needed.

I have recently been diagnosed as having overlap asthma and given a Fostair Nexthaler 200/6 dry powder and it made a huge difference but gave me a cough so my gp gave me what she said was the non powdered Fostair. The nurse contacted me to see how I was getting on and told her I was given Luforbec 100/6 and it wasnt the same. She said it was a cheaper version but I should be on 200/6 so is changing it. I think this nonsense of cfc is just a way of issuing us cheaper versions to cut costs. I do wonder how people will get on with using this as a reliever when having a flare up.

Thanks. I'm still finding it all a bit confusing. I'm not great with change anyway but why change something that works well other than cost?

Its all down to cost at the end of the day no matter what they say, lets hope it works x

I'm sure you're right but what can we do 🤷‍♀️

I agree. Our inhalers are a drop in the ocean compared to methane from animals, filthy engine fumes & wood burners etc 🤬

Nearly all inhalers are cfc free now so think its down to control and money getting us all on the cheapest meds. Yes wood burners have become a modern must have but do nothing for the environment x

I was on Fostair mart regime for years until it stopped being effective, my consultant changed me to Fobumix mart regime I take 1 puff am and pm then can have 6 extra puffs whenever I need to. I been on it around 9 months now and it’s been brilliant for my asthma.

I’m not much help really because I had an allergic reaction to Fostair and another similar. I have to stay on Seritide. Unfortunately I also have a reaction to salbutamol, which affects my heart condition, even using a spacer. I think all you can do is to try. I’m glad your GP was able to reassure you.

Fostair didn’t suit me either ….its on my notes now not to use .

salbutamol I can’t take too much as it can have a effect on me , my heart rate goes up . Waiting for the results of heart tests now.

depends if you are ok with steroids as MART uses steroid based inhalers

Otto11 profile image

Exactly. I didn't want to be taking more steroids. This is why I was confused over it initially. Thanks.
