3 weeks till total hysterectomy op

Hi all...my date for total hysterectomy is only 3 weeks away and I'm starting to get very nervous about it. Will be glad once it's done but the whole going into hospital and being out to sleep frightens me every time and also staying in hospital as don't like hospitals. Also not looking forward to the amount of pain I will be in after. Can anyone please from experience that has had a total hysterectomy please tell me how long it's taken for them to recover after and how long you stayed in for please . Thanks

Hello, I had a tah on 20th June. Womb was very large (about the size of a five month pregnancy) and I had a cut from one side to the other! Was under for three hours. I was in hospital from Tuesday to Friday but would have been out earlier if I had a bowel movement the day before. I've done really well. Was up and about the week after. Have had barely any pain and was having to be careful about not lifting too much. I did not have endo on the outside though. Mine was just inside the uterus. Hope all goes really well for you

Hi. I'm 7 weeks po with endometriosis excision. I totally shared your fears. When I saw the anaesthetist on the morning of the op, I told her how scared I was so when I got to theatre she gave me an injection of Fentanil to calm me. I was out of it before they did the anaesthetic! I'm allergic to opiates so all I had was Fentanil whilst in recovery and then paracetamol and ibuprofen when back on the ward. The gas pain was the worst pain. The actual surgery pain was just uncomfortable. I was only in for one night x

Hi I'm 4 weeks post op now. I had keyhole surgery. I've got 3 scars that have now healed. I was in for 1 night then allowed home. The pain wasn't as bad as i expected but don't get wrong i was in pain. This was managed by pain relief.

I feel fine in myself get the odd twinge now and then when I've overdone it. My only issue is fatigue, i could sleep all day and night. I'm still having side effects from my prostap injection in had in april, hot sweats, night sweats.

I had adenmyosis and had suffered for a good few years. Finally i got to see a consultant who said the only cure is a hysterectomy. I've already been sterilised so this wasn't an issue to me. I believe others who wanted children who need the op can cause depression.

Just remember you are having a major operation and it will take time to heal. I'm ok on the outside it's the inside that needs to repair now.

Hope this has helped you a bit. X

I had a total hysterectomy and endometriosis excision 4 weeks ago. I stayed in hospital for 2 nights.

Mine was laparoscopic so I only had 4 small cuts which healed in a week. There are already not very noticeable.

I have found most of my pain is due to gas pains, so make sure you have peppermint tea in.

Walk around as much as you can too, it helps.

My surgeon has said it's a 8-12 week recovery for what I had done, and have to wear the surgical stockings for another two weeks yet.

Hope that helps x

Thanks ladies. This helps me alot. Will just have to see how I get on. Mine is going to be keyhole too so fingers crossed all goes to plan. Meant to be only in 1 night but they said they will see how I am first to wether I have to station longer plus my blood pressure with this prostap injection has been pretty low so that they say could be a problem to wether I will be allowed home after 1 night. Did u guys have the catheter in for 24hours after as the paper work says I will have it in at least for 24 hours. Never had one. Will see how I feel in the day to weather I need to tell them how nervous I am or not. X

Yes I had a catheter in for 24 hours. They put it in during the op, and you can't feel it. It didn't hurt taking it out, probably as I was still on lots of painkillers.

Thanks peeps. Today has been a struggle. Been walking round the house a little but stomach feels so heavy and pulls when I stand. Also strained earlier which has now left me with a burning sensation down below so hoping I havnt done anything. Only strained cause I was trying to release wind a d I could t but won't be doing that again. Not done anything as hubby tells me off lots when I try but in not doing anything that involves lifting anything. Shouting at the kids was a struggle today so also won't be doing that for a few more days. Hope u get it date through soon pink x
