Levothyroxine brands

I went to pick up my prescription for levo this morning. I take 75mg.

The pharmacy had given me 2 boxes of Teva 50mg and 3 boxes - 1 each of 25mg Wockhardt, Mercury and cant remember the other.

I need to take 50+25 together to make up the 75mg so rejected the prescription and will chat to GP about changing to one 75mg (which Teva do and I don't seem to have an issue with)

I'd been reading here about the discrepancies between brands so didn't think mixing was good but GP and pharmacist see them as a generic product.

I felt daft rejecting it and they only had 50mg Teva and 25mg of Mercury - the latter I've never taken - but was I silly doing this? Do you mix brands of levo ok?

Many members are absolutely fine mixing brands, but some aren’t (myself included) so need to have it written on prescription (eg ’x brand only’ ). I take 50mcg Almus and 25 MP daily fine, but can’t take Teva. If you have any adverse symptoms, then do ask your GP to specify brands you can tolerate on your prescription.

Maybe I should have taken them but have only really started monitoring them last couple of batches to see if I had any problems. I hadn't thought about brands before reading up. Now I'm on 2 tablets and those could be from different brands I thought wouldn't be a good idea especially as I've just upped my dose and want to monitor my symptoms on that one matrix

Hopefully the links below will help.

Just to note, levothyroxine doses are in micrograms (mcg) - not milligrams (mg). :-)

helvella's medicines documents (UK and Rest of the World) can be found here:

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

helvella has created, and tries to maintain, documents containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world. There is now a specific world desiccated thyroid document.

I highly recommend viewing on a computer screen, or a decent sized tablet, rather than a phone. Even I find it less than satisfactory trying to view them on my phone.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - UK

The UK document contains up-to-date versions of the Summary Matrixes for levothyroxine tablets, oral solutions and also liothyronine available in the UK. Includes descriptions of tablet markings which allow identification. Latest updates include all declared ingredients for all UK products and links to Patient Information Leaflets, etc.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - RotW

Contains details of all levothyroxine, liothyronine and combination products - excluding desiccated thyroid products. Details available vary by country and manufacturer.

The link below takes you to a blog page which has direct links to the documents from Dropbox and QR codes to make it easy to access from phones. You will have to scroll down or up to find the link to the document you want.
