The International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) has proposed a set of diagnostic criteria for RLS. If you suffer from all four of these symptoms, you may have RLS. We recommend you visit your GP should you have any health concerns.

Diagnosis of restless legs syndrome (RLS) can be made if all of the following four criteria are met:

1) A need to move the legs, usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable, unpleasant sensations in the legs. Any kind of sensation may be a manifestation of RLS and a wide variety of descriptions have been used ranging from "painful" or "burning" to "Elvis legs". Sometimes the need to move is present without the uncomfortable sensations and sometimes the arms or other body parts are involved in addition to the legs.

2) The need to move and unpleasant sensations are exclusively present or worsen during periods of rest or inactivity such as lying or sitting.

3) The need to move and unpleasant sensations are partially or totally relieved by movement such as walking or stretching at least as long as the activity continues.

4) The need to move and unpleasant sensations are generally worse or exclusively occur in the evening or night

Hi, the above is how you or your doctor would know if you have RLS, you have to meet all the 4 criteria above.... hope this helps...

You are a very smart Person Elisse. =)

Elvis Legs? Did he have this as well or just jittery legs? haha.

I loved how he could move while he sang.

Here is another way of looking at the diagnostic criteria I just saw online the other day.

U. Powerful urge to move legs and other body parts

R.-Rest induced-the urge is worse during inactivity

G.-Gets better with activity-relief is found in movement such as walking or stretching, but symptoms return shortly after stopping. and note this bit-"Massaging or HITTING the limbs can also relieve the symptoms." Me "is that what it comes down to, if you tell your doctor you hit your legs to make them feel better?" Good Grief!

E.-evening and night-the urge to move in the evening or at night. (and again, take note), or "occurs only in the evening or at night". Now, most of us know that we can have symptoms 24/7, and it is in a lot of RLS literature. What I just posted above is part of a new awareness campaign by the UCB drug company that makes the Neupro patch (in the US). "Choose Your Move" is the name of the campaign that is supposed to ramp up in the next`2 months. But, really???? Hitting your legs is a viable treatment?? Not that I have not done that many times myself. :)
