Blood clot in rehab

My partner was supposed to leave hospital after 10 months in rehab after tbi, but he collapsed on Monday and has since found to have blood clots in both lungs. They have

Put him on oxygen and medication to dissolve them.

Has anyone been in this position and how long till they felt better and allowed to continue with rehab?

Blood clots are serious, and sounds like he has other health conditions? but I would assume that once healthy he would be okay to continue rehab, sorry no idea how long that would take.

It's not uncommon Sue for patients who've lain still for long periods to develop blood clots, usually in the legs, which can travel to the lungs. With anticoagulants, followed up with exercise, the risks of dire complications are low.

You could ask the consultant's secretary for a meeting with him to explain which treatment they propose as there are various options such as intravenous removal or dispersal drugs, depending on the clinical decisions.

Hope all goes well for your man Sue ; such a shame this has interrupted his progress. All best wishes, Cat x

Thanks cat, this has worried me, as he isn't well :-( but as always, you give advice and comfort to my thoughts. I was thinking of speaking to the consultant, its just getting hold of her and I needed some advice now, unfortunately I do worry if things are not going right. He has done so well up to now :-)

I'm sure if you talk with the consultant she'll be able to de-mystify the course of action ; always less worrying (I find) when we understand the process rather than relying on our chaotic imaginations. Stay in touch Jo.................xx

Hi Sue, My partner suffered from a blood clot on his lung last September, since then he has been on medication. He has been advised he will stay on these for 6 months and then reviewed. I wish you both well for the future.

Thank you cotton50, he was looking a little better this evening, the medication they are giving him seems to be working. He is still breathing a bit hard and is still on oxygen but has the colour back in his cheeks. X

My partner also had clots in both lungs, this was 9 weeks after his TBI though. He was on bed rest in hospital for around 4 weeks. He hadn't started his rehab at this point, like so many others we had to fight for that to happen.

So sorry for you and your partner, hope he feels well soon.

I feel for you regarding rehab, I too, had to fight for it, which shouldn't have to be like that. I often think about the ones who don't have many visitors and have no one to fight for them, in getting what they need. The ward he is on, has now changed the visiting hours 11-8 and this is so family and friends can help with feeding their relatives, as they are short staffed!
