I am from the United States and I noticed that many in this community are from the UK. In reading some of the posts I noticed a subtle differences in some of the words we use. It made me curious about other things that might be different. Tell me something funny, unique or interesting that I might not know about your part of the world. I am hoping by learning something new, could shake my brain from its current thoughts patterns.

Trying to change thought patterns
Hello all that comes to mind right now is as noticed yesterday USA bring clocks forward for spring 2 weeks before UK so now most in USA are 4 hours behind UK instead of 5 😊
What’s funny here in the USA I don’t know about the uk is we have different time zones across the country. Im in the central time zone. 50 miles away is the eastern time zone which is an hour ahead of us. It gets confusing when we have to go to another city for doctor's appointments.
Yeah the same thing happens here. I am so close to a different time zone that I have to manually adjust my phone or sometimes it will automatically switch over in my home. It’s crazy.
Hi yes that's confusing, they keep debating about not changing clocks as be better for farmers, but they stick to it, it's same allover UK, one thing I noticed when went to a place in Ireland the currency wasnt pounds and pence it was European 🙄they were on about making all currency same at one point allover but now there on about no money and just digital 🙄I 🙏not although I mainly use just my bank card now when shopping it's quicker just to put it on the machine no numbers pressed in now either, but if the computers crash no one will know what anyone's got 💛🌻
In my part of my state we follow a neighboring state’s time zone. The rest of my state follows another.
Crazy stuff about the currency. I just thought of another difference is the US measuring systems. I used to teach at an elementary school and we had to teach both systems. I still haven’t figured out why we haven’t just switched to metric, like the rest of the world.
Do you think metric is simpler?
I just realized yesterday that the UK celebrate s Mothers Day in March.
Yes I realised yesterday USA is may 😊
Thank you for your reply, I am not much of a traveler, but my brother has recently travelled to Africa. Can you tell me something about your culture?
That sounds fabulous. Is this a celebration of some sort?
It sounds like fun. What is pap?
That’s interesting. I love learning about different cultures.
What can you tell me about your weather? Sorry for asking so many questions, but I am curious.
What's bunny chow?
Not bunny curry I hope 🐰
What's the origin of the bunny bit then ?
When I woke up this morning, it was 29 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thanks. As you've probably guessed , I love bunnies. I thought it was an funny term when I saw it, in fact I thought it was possibly rabbit food because of the 'chow' bit 😊
Is it customary in your culture to have pets?
I have 4 dogs. They are small ones. It’s probably too many, but I couldn’t resist.
He sounds like a great companion. My dogs are Shih Tzus. They love to cuddle and play, and of course get into mischief.
I was in New Zealand years ago traveling and I wanted something to put some cold drinks in so I went into a store asking for an ice chest or cooler and they just looked at me like they didn’t know what I was talking about so I went to another store and after looking around and it finding something I asked the same question and they said oh a
“Chilly Bin”
I guess the words “ chilly bin” make sense.
You'd think they'd put two and two together, or maybe had watched a British soap.
Lots of differences between the US and the UK! No jaywalking fines for instance, No armed police, except in times of emergency or Royal Protection. We do get knife crime, and there are drugs if you know where to go. We get the occasional racial tension, but we don't get people trying to take over our Parliament! We have had Miner's Strikes, Ambulance workers strikes, Fire Brigade Strikes, and more.
Webster simplified your version of English, and there are plenty of things in your version of the language which make no sense to us.
Cheers, Midori
You are funny and I agree. I can’t stand our politics over here right now.
Like polenta?
All I can say is get over here ASAP , with that bloke TRUMP - your always be anxious, best wishes 😀🇬🇧
I live in Fife in Scotland and we have some words that are unique to us, I love the word baffies personally which means slippers. My gran always used to laugh at me when I used to say dinne dae that instead of don’t do that
That is interesting. I have never heard of baffies. What is the weather like over there?
Most of the time it’s dreechit. At the moment it’s the usual rain and overcast. However I could go two miles up the road and it could be dry or they could have snow. It’s like we have a climate all of our.
I find this really interesting! We have different dialects here, the states. I live in upper peninsula of Michigan then over the mackinaw bridge is the lower peninsula. Our language is quite different. We cal ourselves yoopers. We call those below the bridge trolls! We speak very differently. We call soda pop, soda lower calls it pop. We end every sentence with eh or hey. Our history is people from Finland and Sweden and Italy. This was a mining town. That has contributed to the dialect.
I am very familiar with the UP of Michigan, and have traveled the Mackinaw Bridge to Mackinac Island. It is a very beautiful area. One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.
Actually I think we took the bridge to St. Ignace and then a ferry to the island.
I’m on the other end of the up. Been over the bridge once in my lifetime.
