Exercising after ablation

I had my cryoablation 2 weeks ago, and have had no afib, but did have high blood pressure last week. that has resolved, but my heart rate goes up quickly upon any exertion. I'm not out of breath, but check my heart rate and it is over 100 and I'm not even breaking a sweat! I'm used to exercising, and I'm a little afraid to do more than really light walking. Is this normal, and does it go away?

Hi there, I had a Cryoablation 3 weeks ago and I'm in a similar position as you. If you think about the ablation procedure your heart has been intentionally damaged and it now needs plenty of rest to recover.

I have been literally just pottering about the house for the last 3 week's, just a few small walks outside and any exertion like ascending my stairs at home is done nice and slow. I have had a raised pulse too which was 85bpm just after the procedure but now is about 68bpm. I was told at hospital the higher pulse is to be expected because of the irritation to the heart caused by this procedure. Of course if you feel unwell and your pulse is high then get it checked out.

Having chatted to plenty of people on here the main theme for recovery is rest and very slow progress over a couple of months not weeks. Try not to push yourself even though your symptoms sound well under control. There's a fact sheet on recovering from ablation written by people who have been there and got the T shirt, if you scroll down to the bottom of this page you should be able to find a link.

Take it easy and best wishes for your recovery ......

thanks. It's hard to remember that 2 weeks is not that long! But I'll try to be patient. Just don't want to gain weight, and when I can't do much, I tend to eat! :)

It is too early to do too much. You will benefit from taking it very easy to start with and very gradually building up your exercise regime.

Your heart and body has been through a lot and it needs to heal. You will get there in the end.

I had my ablation in November 2013. It took 5 months for my various bumps to settle down and almost a year before my resting heart rate returned to normal. However, I have been AF free since then. So I would say take it easy. Gentle walks and listen to your body. If your heart rate is going up so easily then don’t put any strain on it. Patience pays off.

Good luck 🍀

I had ablation nearly 3 weeks ago and stupidly thought I was ok to go back to work today. I only work 2 days a week and a more or less a sit down job, but realise now it was too early to go back. I’m in af now since lunchtime, hope it’s going to revert back on it’s own.

Sing the song 'nice and easy does it ' as you enjoy a pleasant walk along a flat path, ideally out amongst the green stuff. Take it easy, smile and say "Good morning" to everyone you meet …. it really annoys the grumps
