Update with Vit B12 & Folate results

Hi, I posted a little while ago with recent Thyroid results. SlowDragon suggested I come back with some other results once I had them. I'm not diagnosed with a Thyroid issue as of yet.

These results are following an appointment with an NHS Endocrinologist. I didn't think about him taking bloods at the appointment, therefore I didn't stop taking the Methyl B supplement, which I know I should have. I therefore have no idea if these results are an accurate indication of my actual levels.

TSH 1.12 mU/L (0.3-4.5)

Free T4 12.4 pmol/L (10.0-22.0)

Free T3 3.8 pmol/L (3.1-6.8)

Vitamin B12 399 pmol/L (145-569)

Serum Folate 10.7 ug/L (3.9-26.8)

Sodium 138 mmol/L (133-146)

Potassium 4.0 mmol/L (3.5-5.3)

The Endocrinologist completely dismissed my suggestion that my Thyroid isn't optimal and told me the results I'd taken to the appointment were very good. He wrote in his letter "We discussed your results in our endocrine meeting. The team were in agreement that thyroid stimulating hormone levels lie within the normal range, in combination with free T3 and free T4 levels that have been consistently in the normal range, is in keeping with a healthy thyroid profile."

I have a 15 minute call booked in with Country Health this week and an appointment booked with Dr Momi from Functional Thyroid Care at the end of the month. Perhaps they will see my results differently?

I know I have adrenal dysfunction, diagnosed via symptoms and Dutch test - the NHS Endo completely dismissed this too!

Any views/opinions welcome.

Thanks

previous post with extremely low B12 and low folate

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu....

Exactly what have you been taking

Levels are still too low

You need separate B12 daily as well as GOOD QUALITY daily vitamin B complex

Then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), you may be able to reduce then stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

If Vegetarian or vegan likely to need ongoing separate B12 few times a week

Highly effective B12 drops

natureprovides.com/products...

Or

B12 sublingual lozenges

B12 range in U.K. is too wide

Interesting that in this research B12 below 400 is considered inadequate

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Low folate

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

healthline.com/nutrition/fo...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid supplements

thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus B complex popular option. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

Post discussing different B complex

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule) Thorne can be difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12

Thanks. I've already bought the suggested B12 and B complex from your suggestions last time.

Are Sodium and Potassium levels relevant?

Thanks

I've already bought the suggested B12 and B complex from your suggestions last time.

And you have been taking both everyday ?

Taking which ?

Nature Provides B12

Have you been taking full number of B12 drops every day

I haven't started using as I wanted to use up the last of the Lipsomal Methyl B Complex I had prescribed by the functional doctor I was seeing.

I bought Igennus Super B Complex & Cytoplan Vit B12 - I think these were in your suggestions.

What do you think about the Endocrinologist's comment?

Thanks

So in last 7 months since previous post you were only taking B complex …..despite extremely low B12

I would postpone thyroid appointments and spend next 6-8 weeks getting all four vitamins to OPTIMAL levels

Then retest thyroid and vitamins

Then consider next steps

I have been working with a functional doctor, using a number of supplements and looking at nutrition too. Mainly focusing on adrenals. The Methyl B Complex is different to the one I was taking 7 months ago.

Thanks for your help.
